CULTURE AND HISTORY OF SÃO TOMÉ

On the north-eastern shore of the island of São Tomé stands the country's capital. Here, small streets are filled with markets and the people of São Tomé. The main streets are built among trees and offer a welcome shade that protects us from the African sun.

African traditions mingle with Portuguese ones and the result is a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.  Founded in 1535, São Tomé is a city full of history that still has some 16th century buildings left, such as the Fort of Saint Sebastian, nowadays a national museum. Here you can learn about the history of São Tomé e Príncipe e admire the impressive building.

If you want to go for a swim without leaving the city, just head for the PM beach or the ocean causeway beach.

For you meals, you can expect the best and freshest fish, which usually looks like it has jumped straight from the sea into your plate.
