Lunda-Tchokwe masks are a symbol of traditional South Lunde and Saurimo culture.

For centuries, the “Cokwe” have carved several variants of these masks representing community life and its beliefs and rituals.

In the modern cultures, these pieces are essentially decorative, but for the people of Lunda Sul, these masks have mainly a utilitarian function. They are used in cultural rituals such as the passage to adulthood, the celebration of life and death, or the beginning of the hunting season, which is why, even today, they are one of the most important cultural elements in Saurimo.
